Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS)
What is ESOS?
The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is a Government policy which calls for mandatory energy audits in the UK. It requires all companies with more than 250 employees or a turnover of more than £38,937,777 to produce detailed reports on their energy use and efficiency every four years.
What is the ESOS Phase 3 compliance period?
The compliance submission date for ESOS Phase 3 is 5th June 2024. This means that ESOS Phase 3 is currently underway and the countdown clock is ticking.
Why act now?
Not all organisations were in Phase 1 or 2 of ESOS. This is because they did not meet the threshold criteria in either turnover or the number of employees. As ESOS looks at a two-year period of accounting, due to real and anticipated growth, many organisations will fall into Phase 3.
Appointing a Lead Assessor
In Phase 1&2 , it was those organisations which acted sooner by appointing a Lead Assessor and having data collection and analysis systems and processes in place who:
• minimised costs
• maximised returns
• identified and implemented many savings in excess of the ESOS initial costs
• had an easier time of reporting for the whole organisation.
How does it affect your business?
Qualifying businesses must carry out an audit of 90% of total energy usage for a one-year period. The company must also identify efficiency opportunities; evaluate these through lifecycle costs, store the data and inform their regulator.
Why does it exist?
ESOS is the Government’s response to the European Union’s Energy Efficiency Directive which came into effect in December 2012. DECC and Carbon Trust estimate that, with a conservative 6% average energy saving, this will contribute to meeting the EU’s 20% energy reduction target by 2020. Aside from a healthier bottom line, the policy will also help to preserve finite resources.
